Martinez Resigns; where's the Palin-like uproar and cynicism?

So Mel Martinez is resigning the Senate for reasons of faith and family. I want to see the cynicism pour fourth from the media and public about this (not that I have anything against the man). It's just that I have serious doubts about whether the same level of vitriol will spew from the media's keyboards about this resignation as did when Sarah resigned. Too, will there be a foxnews poll that asks whether people think Mel should become a househusband?

Elaine Lafferty (of all people) says Sarah's Smart!!!

HT to Steve Maloney for the heads up on this one.

The former editor in chief of Ms. magazine (and a Democrat) on what she learned on a campaign plane with the would-be VP.

It's difficult not to froth when one reads, as I did again and again this week, doubts about Sarah Palin's “intelligence,” coming especially from women such as PBS's Bonnie Erbe, who, as near as I recall, has not herself heretofore been burdened with the Susan Sontag of Journalism moniker. As Fred Barnes—God help me, I'm agreeing with Fred Barnes—suggests in the Weekly Standard, these high toned and authoritative dismissals come from people who have never met or spoken with Sarah Palin. Those who know her, love her or hate her, offer no such criticism. They know what I know, and I learned it from spending just a little time traveling on the cramped campaign plane this week: Sarah Palin is very smart.

Fox News Poll asks if Sarah should be VP or.....

Housewife? Are they serious?! And the media is reporting the fact that some people chose "housewife" out of the 7 options as an interesting factoid and not as the sexist, worst of stereotype option that it is. Amazing! When are we going to ask whether a male candidate should be a househusband, or a womanizing scumbag? Oh, and where's the outrage from NOW?

Here's the question and the options provided to those being polled:

Q: What do you think is the best job for Sarah Palin now that she has resigned as governor of Alaska?

Homemaker
Television Talk Show Host
Vice President
College Professor
President
(Other)
(Don't know)

A New Definition for "Calibrated"!

When President Obama said he wished he had "calibrated" his comments about the Gates/Cambridge Police Department matter differently, I thought he'd come up with a fabulously creative use of the word "calibrated". So, I submitted the word and the new definition to UrbanDictionary.com and lo' and behold, it's been published! Please visit and give it a thumbs up. Go here, do a "look up" for 'calibrated' and look for the Obama definition submitted by MalibuGA! Thanks!!

Sarah Draws a Crowd @ her annual picnic

Palin's Wasilla picnic draws a crowd: Event takes on added meaning with governor's resignation

WASILLA — Thousands showed up Friday for Gov. Sarah Palin’s annual picnic held in her hometown of Wasilla.

The governor's annual picnic in Anchorage is today from noon to 3 p.m. on the Delaney Park Strip. Gov. Sarah Palin, who is stepping down on Sunday in Fairbanks, will be joined by Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and various commissioners in the event, which has become a tradition going back several governors.

The Picnic includes free food, line entertainment and activities for children.

Palin, who is resigning and leaves office on Sunday, used the occasion, one of a series of picnics she is hosting this weekend, to sign autographs and hand out hot dogs.

"Palin Stokes Debate Over Obama's Energy Plan"

...so says Fox News. I say, well at least someone is finally doing it!

Here's the op-ed, in full, as it appeared in the WaPo:

The 'Cap And Tax' Dead End

By Sarah Palin
Tuesday, July 14, 2009

There is no shortage of threats to our economy. America's unemployment rate recently hit its highest mark in more than 25 years and is expected to continue climbing. Worries are widespread that even when the economy finally rebounds, the recovery won't bring jobs. Our nation's debt is unsustainable, and the federal government's reach into the private sector is unprecedented.

Unfortunately, many in the national media would rather focus on the personality-driven political gossip of the day than on the gravity of these challenges. So, at risk of disappointing the chattering class, let me make clear what is foremost on my mind and where my focus will be:

I am deeply concerned about President Obama's cap-and-trade energy plan, and I believe it is an enormous threat to our economy. It would undermine our recovery over the short term and would inflict permanent damage.

American prosperity has always been driven by the steady supply of abundant, affordable energy. Particularly in Alaska, we understand the inherent link between energy and prosperity, energy and opportunity, and energy and security. Consequently, many of us in this huge, energy-rich state recognize that the president's cap-and-trade energy tax would adversely affect every aspect of the U.S. economy.

There is no denying that as the world becomes more industrialized, we need to reform our energy policy and become less dependent on foreign energy sources. But the answer doesn't lie in making energy scarcer and more expensive! Those who understand the issue know we can meet our energy needs and environmental challenges without destroying America's economy.

Job losses are so certain under this new cap-and-tax plan that it includes a provision accommodating newly unemployed workers from the resulting dried-up energy sector, to the tune of $4.2 billion over eight years. So much for creating jobs.

In addition to immediately increasing unemployment in the energy sector, even more American jobs will be threatened by the rising cost of doing business under the cap-and-tax plan. For example, the cost of farming will certainly increase, driving down farm incomes while driving up grocery prices. The costs of manufacturing, warehousing and transportation will also increase.

The ironic beauty in this plan? Soon, even the most ardent liberal will understand supply-side economics.

The Americans hit hardest will be those already struggling to make ends meet. As the president eloquently puts it, their electricity bills will "necessarily skyrocket." So much for not raising taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year.

Even Warren Buffett, an ardent Obama supporter, admitted that under the cap-and-tax scheme, "poor people are going to pay a lot more for electricity."

We must move in a new direction. We are ripe for economic growth and energy independence if we responsibly tap the resources that God created right underfoot on American soil. Just as important, we have more desire and ability to protect the environment than any foreign nation from which we purchase energy today.

In Alaska, we are progressing on the largest private-sector energy project in history. Our 3,000-mile natural gas pipeline will transport hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of our clean natural gas to hungry markets across America. We can safely drill for U.S. oil offshore and in a tiny, 2,000-acre corner of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge if ever given the go-ahead by Washington bureaucrats.

Of course, Alaska is not the sole source of American energy. Many states have abundant coal, whose technology is continuously making it into a cleaner energy source. Westerners literally sit on mountains of oil and gas, and every state can consider the possibility of nuclear energy.

We have an important choice to make. Do we want to control our energy supply and its environmental impact? Or, do we want to outsource it to China, Russia and Saudi Arabia? Make no mistake: President Obama's plan will result in the latter.

For so many reasons, we can't afford to kill responsible domestic energy production or clobber every American consumer with higher prices.

Can America produce more of its own energy through strategic investments that protect the environment, revive our economy and secure our nation?

Yes, we can. Just not with Barack Obama's energy cap-and-tax plan.

The writer, a Republican, is governor of Alaska.

Sarah's July 4 Letter.

Sarah's July 4, 2009 Letter:

Happy 4th of July from Alaska!

On this Independence Day, I am so very proud of all those who have chosen to serve our great nation and I honor their selflessness and the sacrifices of their families, too.

If I may, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the last 24 hours and share my
thoughts with you.

First, I want to thank you for your support and hard work on the values we share. Those values led me to the decision my family and I made. Yesterday, my family and I announced a decision that is in Alaska’s best interest and it always feels good to do what is right. We have accomplished more during this one term than most governors do in two – and I am proud of the great team that helped to build these wonderful successes. Energy independence and national security, fiscal restraint, smaller government, and local control have been my priorities and will remain my priorities.

For months now, I have consulted with friends and family, and with the Lieutenant
Governor, about what is best for our wonderful state. I even made a few administrative changes over that course in time in preparation for yesterday. We have accomplished so much and there’s much more to do, but my family and I determined after prayerful consideration that sacrificing my title helps Alaska most. And once I decided not to run for re-election, my decision was that much easier – I’ve never been one to waste time or resources. Those who know me know this is the right decision and obvious decision at that, including Senator John McCain. I thank him for his kind, insightful comments.

The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the “politics of personal destruction”. How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make. But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all, including your family.

I shared with you yesterday my heartfelt and candid reasons for this change; I’ve never thought I needed a title before one’s name to forge progress in America. I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint. I hope you will join me. Now is the time to rebuild and help our nation achieve greatness!

God bless you! And I look forward to making a difference – with you!

Good piece from Mary Matalin

Mary Matalin says:

Before we conduct the political proctology of Governor Palin, conservatives need to take a deep breath and consider the ramifications of our naval-gazing and infighting.

The essence of modern conservatism — and its source of strength — has been the vigilant and rigorous reform and renewal of flagging institutional governance, based on balancing maximum individual liberty with social order. That message was the catalyst for policy and political progress. To their detriment, Republicans have fallen into the Information Age’s false premise that the messenger is the message. Such a mindset is tailor-made for liberals, who have perfected the politics of personal destruction and have erected an unprecedented infrastructure for mauling conservative messengers.

Too many Republicans go weak-kneed in the face of chattering-class criticism of personalities that don’t conform to a clichéd, insular ideal of urbanity — which, not incidentally, never includes conservative Americans. Rather than defend the true superstars of message-coherence and -delivery, such as Rush Limbaugh, they jump on the trendy totalitarian bandwagon in the absurd belief that they will either be let into the club or spared its wrath.

As we have been saying for decades, elections have consequences, and we are now experiencing the scariest consequence of an election in decades. This president is reordering, at warp speed, the relationship between lawmakers and citizens; he is reshaping the role and scope of a constitutional order two centuries in the making.

We need to quit looking for a white knight or queen mother for a messenger and instead double down on the message of principled, reform-minded, constitutional governance. We should measure the records and vision of all conservative contenders against that template. We should hold conservative officeholders to its promise. And we should never allow those who seek the demise of conservatism, and the consequent erosion of our unique freedom, to determine the fate of our candidates.
